Yet the position of the &#8220;bottom&#8221; plays a major role in adjusting the potential well. Shouldn&#8217;t the choice of the zero point of energy be completely arbitrary?<\/p>\n<p><u>Answer:<\/u> In this problem, the zero point of energy cannot actually be chosen completely freely. There is, in fact, one particularly distinguished energy: the zero point of energy given by the Coulomb potential (i.e. the energy that <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.milq.info\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-5270caa46a5dda25e82dd29e8874eb13_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#87;&#40;&#114;&#41;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"19\" width=\"42\" style=\"vertical-align: -5px;\"\/> approaches at infinity). Relative to this zero point, electrons with <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.milq.info\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-5bd5eceb61891a1903f53c3b770ba9cb_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#69;&#32;&#60;&#32;&#48;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"15\" width=\"49\" style=\"vertical-align: -2px;\"\/> are bound, and those with <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.milq.info\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-7299f47bc36d0faa8d621fa7cc1672f3_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#69;&#32;&#62;&#32;&#48;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"15\" width=\"49\" style=\"vertical-align: -2px;\"\/> are free.<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/data\/_uploaded\/image\/dreipot2.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p>For the potential well, usually only the distance of the energy levels from the &#8220;bottom&#8221; is relevant. Here, however, this is not the physically interesting quantity. Instead, what matters is the distance of the energy level under consideration from the zero point of energy of the Coulomb potential (see figure).
